Maskne (Mask Acne) Fighters — What Works

It’s been two months since I dropped a post in here and many things have happened since then. We’ve ventured out more. We have dined out at restaurant patios a handful of times. I have seen my massage and physical therapists, and had gone out with ONE friend. I had a face mask all the time—except when eating, of course. Yes, you can call me that person who is being extra careful. It really doesn’t hurt me and I have no interest in spreading or contracting Covid-19.

I wear a mask...

Pan De Sal (Filipino Bread Rolls)

I dug deep into my recipe vault, straight into the Childhood Comfort Food section, to make these Pan De Sal or Filipino Bread Rolls. This is what happens during the pan de mic. Oh, I have reached bad pans (puns) level.

It’s been over two months since “staying at home” and physically distancing happened, and I needed a warm hug in the form of freshly baked buns. We used to get these fresh from the neighbourhood panaderia (bakery) early in the morning.

I learned to eat pan de sal with...

Blueberry Boy Bait (Blueberry Coffee Cake)

Blueberry Boy Bait (Blueberry Coffee Cake)

If I hadn’t baked this and didn’t know what it was called, Blueberry “Boy Bait” would be the last name I would associate with it. First of all, it is no looker right out of the oven. Second, it seems hearty at best, a cake only a mother could love.  However, take one bite and you will kind of get why this blueberry coffee cake is a winner. It placed second in the 1954 Pillsbury Recipe and Baking Contest (the precursor to Pillsbury Bake-Off). Renny Powell, a fifteen year-old girl,...

What a difference a month makes. Scratch that. Make it almost two months since I’ve posted here. Thanks to the Covid-19/Coronavirus pandemic, our new reality is blowing everyone’s mind. I don’t think any one of us could have ever imagined that we would be cooped up at home to “flatten the curve”; i.e. prevent further spread of the  virus. It’s heartbreaking how humanity feels like it has gone to a screeching halt.

Over the past few weeks, a lot of folks—us included—have turned to the kitchen to nourish and de-stress ourselves....

Picking A Clean Red Lipstick

Picking A Clean Red Lipstick

Picking a clean red lipstick? What is that? Ask about just red lipsticks you’ll find two opposing camps: you’ll either find some who LOVE flaunting their fiery red lipsticks or those who avoid it like the plague. Period. Full Stop. When pressed about why they avoid it, these are some of the reasons: picking a (clean) red lipstick is challenging, they’re full of “bad stuff”, or they don’t feel comfortable wearing red.

I’ve been there and it’s frustrating. I love a good red—red wine, red nail polish, red bag, red shoes…ahhh! For...

One-Bowl Fudge Brownie Recipe

One-Bowl Fudge Brownie Recipe

Do we  need another fudge brownie recipe? The better question is—Do you love brownies?

If yes, then you owe it to yourself to bake this. Made with bittersweet chocolate, this gooey-in-the-center and crisp-on-the-outside brownie is the perfect combination of everything.

Why I love this brownie recipe: It doesn’t require any special equipment. You effectively* only need one medium heatproof bowl and a spatula to prepare this. [Unless you like to prepare the mise en place for a few ingredients like below. But really, you don’t need to.] This is perfect for last-minute brownie cravings because it...

Pierre Hermé’s Madeleines

I love madeleines. It sounds so cliché. Nevertheless, each freshly baked piece simply brings me so much joy. They’re the right touch of sweet and adorable (hah) that I need in my day. Pierre Hermé’s Madeleines are terrific—delicately light with crisp edges. They are deceivingly simple to make with accessible pantry ingredients. The most “difficult” part of the recipe, really, is the wait.

This already a great recipe to start with, however, here are a few tips that can help guarantee consistently good results:

1. Use a good pan. The Williams Sonoma...
